Former Real Madrid boss, Fabio Capello, has said that the goalscoring records of Napoli star, Victor Osimhen, Roma’s Tammy Abraham and Romelu Lukaku while in Inter Milan, all in Serie A were signs that Italy’s World Cup humiliation was on the cards.
Italy won the Euro 2020 but suffered a shock defeat against North Macedonia in last night’s World Cup playoff semi-final.
Any hopes of the Azzurri qualifying for Qatar 2022 ultimately crashed but Capello insists the warning signs have been there for a while.
The former England national team coach pointed to the success Victor Osimhen, Tammy Abraham and Lukaku, who according to him, were ordinary strikers before coming to Serie A, have enjoyed in recent seasons in Italy.
Abraham was deemed surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge last summer but has scored over 20 goals in the Serie A already this season..
Lukaku also helped Inter Milan win the league last season, scoring plenty of goals, while Osimhen has kept Napoli’s hopes of winning the league this season alive, scoring week in week out.
‘Victor Osimhen, Romelu Lukaku and Tammy Abraham were just normal strikers abroad. They became champions in Italy. This should raise some questions,” the Italian lamented on Sky Italia after watching his country defeated by Northern Macedonia.
